Sri Lanka Cricket Franchise Leagues.


When we are talking about Sri Lankan cricket franchise leagues effortlessly our mind goes to Lanka Premier League (LPL) which that is introduced recently. 
Before concerning about the LPL I remember the name Sri Lankan Premier League (SLPL) the which league held in 2012.

The Sri Lanka Premier League was a Twenty20 cricket competition in Sri Lanka organized by Sri Lankan Cricket Board. It was introduced to be the premier Twenty20 league in the country, organized by the Sri Lanka cricket board.   This replaced the inter-provincial Twenty20 competition. After the 2011 season was postponed, it’s first season was held in 2012.

Seven teams which represented different areas of the country battled together for one trophy. After all in the finals “Uva Next” won the match by beating “Nagenahira Nagas” by 19 runs (D/L).

When we are talking about the performances aspect of the league, Left hand fast bowler Shaminda Eranga was awarded as the Man of The Tournament. Most runs scored by a batsman was 212 runs, Scored by the Right handed opening batsman Dilshan Munaweera. Right hand medium fast bowler Jacob Oram was the leading wicket taker of the tournament by taking 15 wickets through out the tournament.

After 2012 season, 2013 and 2014 seasons were cancelled due to organizational problems and lack of sponsorships.

No such tournament has been held on the country after the SLPL 2012 season. After all Sri Lankan cricket fans heard a good news since the beginning of 2020. That news was that Sri Lanka cricket board is planning to organize a Twenty20 cricket league which is named as Lanka Premier League ( LPL ).

The 2020 Lanka Premier League also known as “My11 Circle LPL T20”, for sponsorship reasons, was the inaugural edition of the Lankan Premier League Twenty20 franchise cricket tournament in Sri Lanka. Five teams based on various Sri Lankan cities played a total of 23 matches. It was originally scheduled to start in August but was rescheduled several times due to restrictions by the Covid-19 pandemic.

When talking about the performances, Jaffna Stallions won by  53 runs by beating Gall Gladiators to win the LPL 2020 championship at the final match. And the player of the tournament was the Right handed leg break bowler Wanindu Hasaranga. Not only the player of the tournament but also he was the leading wicket taker of the tournament by taking 17 wickets. Most runs scored by a batsman was the Left Handed opening batsman Dhanushka Gunathilaka who scored 476 runs in total.With hope for a better future let’s wait for the next season of the Lanka Premier League…
