The year 1996 was a milestone in the Sri Lankan cricket
history and up to date it is the greatest achievement of the Sri Lankan cricket
team. Today 17th of March 2021 we celebrate the 25th anniversary
of this glorious achievement of winning the One Day International World Cup. Aravinda De Silva become the man of the match
by obtaining 107 runs from 124 balls. This
was the turning point of the match which led to the victory.
The leadership of Arjuna Ranathunga was a huge factor that
contributed to the success of the Sri Lankan cricket team at the 1996 world cup.
Sanath Jayasooriya became the man of the series due to his consistency of great
performances.
By winning the world cup in 1996 the Sri Lankans from a tiny
island in Asia dethroned the dominant Australians who had won the world cup in
the previous 5 years. Sri Lankans were
able to be the number one back in 1996 but in the present, this is not the
case. There is something wrong which we all need to discuss and take action as
cricket fans in Sri Lanka. Let’s all hope that the future will be brighter than
today.
